Model Boat Steam Engines

These Rocking Whale model boat steam engines are designed for working miniature craft. Use the published recommended boat-size range as a selection guide, then discuss your hull, boiler and project requirements directly with the team.

The range

Match the engine to the model boat.

BL1K is published for 50–80 cm boats; V2 and L2 for 70–130 cm; and the four-cylinder V4 for 90–150 cm. These figures are selection guidance, not a replacement for evaluating the complete installation.

Selection guidance

Frequently asked questions.

How do I choose a steam engine for a model boat?

Use the published model-boat length guidance as a starting point and compare layout, available installation space, torque and the boiler setup for your project.

What is the difference between the V2 and L2?

Both are twin-cylinder engines with the same published boat-size guidance. V2 has a compact 90° layout, while L2 uses a classic inline configuration.

Why is reversible Stephenson valve gear essential for RC model steam boats?

Stephenson link motion allows an RC servo to shift the reversing lever, directly switching propeller direction between forward and reverse without needing a separate mechanical reversing gearbox or transmission.

What propeller size matches miniature steam engines across 50–150 cm hulls?

Single-cylinder 3 cc engines (BL1K) pair with 35–45 mm propellers in 50–80 cm hulls; twin-cylinder 6 cc engines (V2/L2) drive 45–60 mm propellers in 70–130 cm hulls; and the 12 cc V4 swings 60–80 mm scale propellers in 90–150 cm craft.
